Any reason why ?
What does make bindir=/path/to/dir install (as in UserGuide) do actually.

Kannel is pretty independent of the directory in which it resides. I rarely use "make bindir". Important files are the binaries and the configuration file/s (in case you use "include"). Just be sure you have the right permissions!.
