Thanks, but thats not really what I meant. Say I dial a number halfway
round the world, the call might take 10 seconds to set up after the
dial, as opposed to a local one which takes 1 second. What I need to
know is can I tell if the line is actually ringing, rather than the
silence during the setup.

Do fancier GSM modems report more status info?
