Gerard, System-ID equals to "username" on Kannel. You know that isn't it? ;)
Most of the other parameters have their Kannel counterparts. Check the Kannel docs for all available parameters, the names are pretty close most of the time. Please also check the logs (set log-level to 0 to make it more verbose if you want) for the error # you get. I/O error could mean a lot of things, from a misconfigured firewall to almost anything.
