Ever SMS needs to be handled by a SMSC (ok, in some ways we could circumvent that... I know... don't shoot on me... but that's "higher art" and out of scope for now). You either need: a) a GSM modem to serve as a "simple SMSC" b) a connection to a SMSC (in terms of user account credentials). I'd recommend to grep a "SMS archtecture" tutorial somewhere.
