seems you operator has no clue what he is talking about ;) In SMPP v3.4 the PDU type is called 'enquire_link', which is a valid "ping, are you alive" mechanism in the TCP connection on both communication entities. And yes, Kannel does support this, it's set via the 'enquire-link-interval' config directive in the smsc group.
