Yes, I have tried to send SMS while the bearerbox is in that state and SMSes just do not get sent. What I do usually is kill the bearerbox and the smsbox and restart them again. Then, magically, all the SMSes that were held are sent.
It is as if the bearerbox still works but the smsbox is no longer bound to the bearerbox and keeps the SMSes and replies until the box is back up again.
