One last thought. Read latest UG there is a dedicated section about modem
setup. You can try using wvdial or trial & error to get a workable
init-string.

Thanks Rene,
I tried to set the correct message storage with no access at all:
AT+CPMS=?
+CPMS: (),(),()
OK
So, I guess I can't receive any message on Nokia 6300 because neither will I
get notified (no CNMI) nor can I access any memory on it.. Already looking
for different device.
Thanks anyway for your fast replies!

Some Nokia phones are indeed reported not to support the AT+CNMI command.
About your other error: Try message-start = 1 in group = modems (which
should be the default).

Subject: Nokia 6300 - CNMI init
Greetings!
I'm trying to configure kannel modem settings for my Nokia 6300 and still
having troubles with activating the message notification via CNMI. In
minicon I get ERROR response even for AT+CNMI=? or AT+CNMI? or CNMI=?. I
guess it means Nokia 6300 doesn't support those AT commands? I tried
activating the sim-memory = true option while skiping the CNMI command but
ended up with "couldn't parse all memory locations : 0:''. memory check
error"
Is there any other option besides CNMI? Anyone gone through with 6300? Can't
find much via Google, just people having same issues without posting
solutions..
Any help (I'd prefer not to change device) would be appreciated,
