Potentially you can try if a setup that includes a LiveUSB of Fedora 9 with KBabel/Kaider installed and the .po files in place helps. That would mean that the translators don't really have to work on Windows and along side they would be having an idea of how the interface looks for Linux.
Caveat, I haven't tried this setup / spin myself, but there doesn't seem to be a technology reason as to why it won't work.
I, with a lot of help from Amitakhya Phukan, the
Assamese language maintainer of Gnome, finally settled with a combinbation of Baraha+Poedit+Windows east Asian language pack. Ofcourse, the simplest input method i found was phonetic. On Linux i was using Yudit.
I lot of people use KBabel or Kaider - did you face any issues with those tools ?
To slightly drift off-topic, translation as
it exists now is too complicated. It has to be a web interface based exercise so that people simply log on to a webpage and start typing. The client side script on the webpage must take care of the transliteration.
Yes that is one aspect of it. There is a project called entrans which is used by the Kannada teams to get translations going.
I have tried persuading people to translate, and its very difficult the way it is right now. I understand that it causes some problems with credits being lost, but that is a problem that has to be ironed out. I just wish there were a webpage, where you could upload .po files, make changes, and then redownload it. I did suggest Mr. Amitakhya to put up a Pootle based webpage, and he is working on it i think. In any case we plan to set one up in the future.
Pootle is just a tool - wherefrom would you source the .po files from for these potential translators ? And, it would be interesting to know more about your comment regarding "credits being lost"
Additionally, for the folks you have been persuading to translate, I assume they would be for various Indian languages - have you been coordinating with the language team(s) on whether they have some institutional memory that can be re-used to help you get them to contribute ?
Have you written up someplace about the experiments you have been doing with L10n work ?
