You should expect a drive to fail 10 minutes after the warranty expires. Sorry for the cynicism..... Joking aside, disk drives that are taken care of really do tend to fail either very early (infant mortality) or very near the end of the warranty period. I don't think I've seen a modern consumer drive with a warranty of more than a few years, certainly nowhere near 10.
