That  depends on how the drive is used.  I worked in remote sensing where
many large files were processed and moved to long-term storage so we
could process new files, so drives constantly being filled to 80% and
cleared. The processing was designed to minimize head
movements -- just sequentially reading files on one filesystem and
writing to a different filesystem.   I learned to start purchasing
paperwork
6-months before warranty expired, and to include a couple spares in the
order to cover early mortality.  At end of warranty the drives were replaces
I tried to get models with 5-year warranties to minimize disruptions
replacing
drives,  Unscheduled disruptions from failed drives effected lots of data
users who wondered why the next set of new files hadn't appeared on
schedule.

We had some Windows users who were constantly filling disks.  IT
managed those systems and had cases of disks with Windows
images ready to go.
