I worked in remote sensing where many large files were processed and moved to long-term storage so we could process new files, so drives constantly being filled to 80% and cleared. The processing was designed to minimize head movements -- just sequentially reading files on one filesystem and writing to a different filesystem. I learned to start purchasing paperwork 6-months before warranty expired, and to include a couple spares in the order to cover early mortality. At end of warranty the drives were replaces I tried to get models with 5-year warranties to minimize disruptions replacing drives, Unscheduled disruptions from failed drives effected lots of data users who wondered why the next set of new files hadn't appeared on schedule. > > Joking aside, disk drives that are taken care of really do tend to > fail either very early (infant mortality) or very near the end of the > warranty period.
