"I swapped usb plugs around" - I assume you use those 3.x -
but have you tried all ports?
I've seen enough of weird misbehaviour stemming from usb
power delivery - that I follow simple rule: try all of
ports, even with a simple usb stick.
Start with those on-board as opposed to those protruding via
cables off the mainboard.
Have you tried with 'fwupd' *un-installed* - yes remove the
package, for the time being - but generally, you want your
OS to have fwupg regardless, yes. (maybe reboot)
There are a few dependencies but nothing critical - gnome
software updates can do without for a short/long while.
But - if I read it correctly - the disc does not read in the
system *which* *made* (in the same config/state) the very
backup - then it is most likely bad (unless /journalctl/ you
showed is also from that machine, then... try 'fwupd'
ps, side, friendly, advice - it's not easy do do when one is
in the zone - try to put your words more concisely, eg.
"... The drive is an external one. The optical drive is
powered.."
The drive is an external one & is powered...
think of us "outside the zone" and that you'd be one - it
will make it much easier to all.--
