Seems like a valid option to me. Looking at a screenshot you can have a lot more visible tabs if they're vertical. Also, with everyone having widescreen monitors, It's better to take some space off the side than the top.

Your suggestion about phones is kind of silly. How would a phone in portrait mode handle this at all? Firefox on phones uses a very different method of managing tabs.
