It's been a while since I set up this laptop, with encrypted partitions that require a passphrase to unlock at boot, so I don't remember the exact steps. But I'm pretty sure that I didn't have to do any such thing.

I just booted the live image, started the installer and specified custom partitioning. There was a simple checkbox to encrypt the new partition. That's it.
