Thank for the feedback.
It seems that I ignored recommendation from Francis.
Anyway.
I always upgrade my machines from .. fc34 to fc36, to fc38, to fc40, etc...
On a machine that I did not upgraded (still fc42)
ls /etc/authselect
authselect.conf  dconf-db     fingerprint-auth  password-auth  smartcard-auth  user-nsswitch.conf.bak
custom           dconf-locks  nsswitch.conf     postlogin      system-auth

On the faulty machine (in fc44)
custom  user-nsswitch.conf.bak
I.e. no postlogin !

It seems to be the issue.
I am going to run
authselect select local with-silent-lastlog with-fingerprint with-mdns4 --force
on the faulty machine and let you know

Right. It shows also, before this coredump:

gdm-launch-environment][1535]: PAM unable to dlopen(/usr/lib64/security/pam_lastlog.so): /usr/lib64/security/pam_lastlog.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

You are thus in this common issue:

https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/gdm-crashes-after-upgrade-to-fedora-43-due-to-authselect-migration/171961

as I suggested on July 6:

https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/[email protected]/message/DOIMUT6UGCF4SYPSKY5PW7W5ZKYIG2SL/

Apply the proposed workarounds.
