SOLVED!
Thanks for the suggestions again. I just removed completely the 1.29 Geany,
along with all plugins and was just to try installing the new one, ran
./configure and I opened the README file and surprise - it opened in Geany
1.34.1 ! So the problem was the existence of the old Geany.
Now my only question is -- will the plugins for 1.34 work with 1.34.1 or should
I wait for 1.34.1 plugins?

That's my guess suggesting this. And using the wrong libgeany is the
only explanation I have for the wrong version number here.
BTW, Eugene: what does
$ ldd /usr/local/bin/geany
give you?
