Thanks for all the replies. I must have been wrong and ascribed the behavior of my favorite code editor, jEdit, to Geany. My apologies.
I'm coming back to coding after a several month hiatus due to retirement so I'm getting reacquainted with old habits and programs. I will point out, though, as I write this note online, that the cursor in this comment editor goes to the beginning of the line if you arrow down to a new line! :-) All the best!
