I am sure that you know much more about this than I do. But I installed 
devtoolset on Scientific Linux 6.3, derived from RHEL 6.3, and it allows the 
use of new compilers with the old os.

included a tool tool, scl, that enables one to have a separate bash shell that 
calls the newly installed gcc. Note last thing on this 
page:http://linux.web.cern.ch/linux/devtoolset/index.shtml I was interested in 
seeing if I could port the ROOT software from CERN to a Cubieboard running 
Fedora 18 beta ARM but wasn't totally successful. I never could get Redsleeve 
to boot on my Cubieboard so couldn't try compiling the devtoolset on it.
