what has to be done to get logging of messages?

No default /etc/crontab. This is typically just a comment file. I see logrotate, so I am assuming that crony is present.

I suspect I have to install logwatch and postfix. mutt for local mail reading.

then I will probably install a desktop, like xfce, but not run it locally. Install vncserver for remote graphical access.

More fun!

I am obviously spoiled with lots of stuff just there.

Installing httpd, bind, webmin, and other fun things yet to come.

Now that I know how to build compressed images, and I have perhaps 6 servers to build. I build one base setup and clone from there.
