I appreciate your work on this! Minor curiosity: the release notes
say that vm.swappiness=1 was put into the cmdline.txt file. Why not
keep it in the (usual/standard) /etc/sysctl.conf location? That's
where folks would typically look to see and adjust a kernel tunable
parameter like that.
Good question!
I thought I saw that on any of the other raspi distro's. (and I thought
it would be a smart plan to reduce swappiness on the SD) But now you're
asking, I cant find again which cmdline.txt was the one where I saw that.
Then I did the stupid check:
# sysctl -a |grep swapp
vm.swappiness = 60
and it doesn't even work :(
I'll change this in an later version.
You might as well set it to 0. That'll make it not swap unless there's
no page cache left to reclaim (i.e. unless is really has no choice,
other than to invoke the OOM killer).
If you have plenty of CPU but are tight on RAM, setting up a zram device
and swapping onto that can be quite handy. I usually set one up
totalling 50% of the RAM, which typically compresses down to 25% of the
RAM, so on a 512MB machine you set up a 256MB zram which compresses down
to 128MB, i.e. you get an extra 128MB nearly for free (and certainly a
lot faster than swapping to an SD card).
