I don't think MHR means it's up to you or any packager to make things backward-compatible, but rather up to the developers of e.g. wxGTK. Unfortunately OSS developers have little incentive to do this, because that's extra effort that is much less interesting than working on whatever is the bleeding edge. It's not all that difficult, as user even of yum, to simply avoid updates that break things.
