Why?

Have you tested to see that it does indeed fix your issue?

Why are you certain that this is the culprit, as the centos5 version
has been working flawlessly for me for some time.
Indeed.
I have no idea how many CDs I've burned with k3b in CentOS 5.x. There was one project alone in which I burned 54 DVDs. k3b has never frozen that machine; most certainly has never wiped out a filesystem!

I am using a SATA Plextor PX-755SA, Bios 1.07 DVD/CD burner. I think
it may be the problem, but am not completely sure yet.

What burner are you using? I would like your reliability!

Many thanks,

My apologies...
I saw your question only a few minutes ago. (I failed to include "cc:lists.rpmforge.net" and all the cc: stuff was stuck in limbo/purgatory.) Anyhow, the answer to your question: NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A ATA interface, connected secondary/master. As I recall, I ordered the drive from Newegg perhaps 3-4 years ago. It has never burned a coaster except as a result of Cockpit Trouble. I have used it with both cdrecord and growisofs from the command line, the several versions of k3b that I've used on this machine and, at one time which seems a distant memory, X-CD-Roast. I must admit that I have burned only one DL DVD. That was for a friend. I'm too miserly to buy DL blanks.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for remembering me.

I reported the problem to CentOS:
      http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=3002

I have since changed my SATA Plextor DVD burner for a
with a SATA Sony/NEC/Optiarc AD-7200S-0B DVD burner
Sadly, no symptom change.

I have now corrupted my file system so badly that I have
had to wipe and restore twice. Fortunately I am really,
really good at restoring.

One time I fired up K9Copy without realizing it would
call K3B/growisofs and got an instant kernel panic when the
K3B splash screen popped up. Bummer!

But all is not so bad. As long as I stay off anything that
uses growisofs, I am fine. I can burn unending CDs and not
a single kernel panic, even with K3B.

And, I can burn DVD's all day long without a hitch, if I use
(Windows) Deep Burner under Wine. (Although I had to uninstall
the aged wine RPM and reinstall the Wine tar ball to get Wine's
DVD drivers to work properly.)

Hmmmm. I wonder. I had always thought the problem was
kernel related. I now wonder if it is growisofs. Seems
that if it was the kernel, I would get kernel panics
from Wine/Deep Burner as well.
