It's a fairly new language that aims at solvaing the two language problem, ie reducing the gap between interactive, easy to use and prototype in but also slow languages (scilab, matlab, python, ...) and more efficient and less friendly languages (C, Fortran, ...). It's new and still evolving a lot but quite interesting (more info at julialang.org).
