How about checking out maven-1.0-beta-10-SNAPSHOT from CVS and building that?
I am running that with jdk 1.4.2-beta (tried with 1.3.1 as well) and no particular problems. (well there are some specific ssh problems with cygwin on windows I've run into, but they are rectifiable).
