Yeah, I figured out that there were maven_opts just like ant_opts, but to no avail, I'm still getting the same out of memory error.
If you're using linux/unix, the MAVEN_OPTS value will overwritten in the maven script (or used to be - have a look and see). Try editing the value directly in MAVEN_HOME/bin/maven.
If you're on Windows and you have MAVEN_OPTS set correctly then it should work OK.
