You could run maven with a "--debug" flag to get more diagnostics.

Ignore this message, it is for a new version of Maven that hasn't been 
released yet :-)

Sorry, I've not used the offline mode so can't help you there ... look on the 
Wiki to see if someone else has been using your type of setup.
