i had a similar issue when deploying over ssh.  In my case, it was 
hanging when maven was trying to remove the tar.gz file after 
successful extraction.  i realized  that on the server the rm command 
was aliased to 'rm -i' which caused the hang.  i get rid of the alias, 
and everything worked fine for me.
you might be having  a different issue though.
