Definitely maven is build tool which is defining its own standards and
refusing to work smoothly with
the projects which are off those standards.

I am sure that most of the companies don't use any standards when if it
comes to artifact management systems
defining common project layout, standaring build scripts, keeping tracks of
project's dependencies, generation of uniformed
documentation for projects and so on. I wonder if you can taken radom
developer in your comany which has not been
working for project "A" and if he will know without looking at any build
scripts how he should build jar file of that project
or if he will be able to tell you excatly what are the dependecies of this
projects and what are the version of those dependecies.
And this is just a peek of an iceberg.

If your company has such standards then it might be that maven standards are
not attractive for you.
In any way as far as I know we have no plan to make maven much more flexible
and mandate the pratices
which we find to be antipatterns. That's our conscious choice. Simply there
is a lot of build system with ant and its derivates
being currently the most prominent and there is really no need for
developing one more similar build system.

Agreed :( (but I would rather call it a lack of standards then standards)
