Step 1: even fairly straightforward POMs that need more than the default conventions rapidly get verbose and hard to read due to XML.
Step 2: Hiding behind that, though, there are, I claim, areas of genuine confusion. For the simple cases, it's fine to say 'convention over configuration'. Lots of us can agree on the conventions for turning a heap of Java files into a Jar. However, for better or worse, many of us have to do things with builds for which there is no self-evident convention. The maven plugins for the job pick something, and then reality shows up and kicks us in the head.
