Try Eclipse STS to simplify your life.

We found CXF to be very easy and much simpler than Axix2.

JSF 2 over Struts

Spring, Hibernate and MySQL is a great framework.
Don't start any new project without Dependency Injection.

Don't try to bend Maven to your will.  Do things the "Maven way".
Do not write a custom plug-in until you get your project working with the basic Maven set.
