the not-yet released version of mevenide for netbeans does have such a feature, both in code completion for the pom.xml and in project gui. I'd like to push that out in a month or so. it works by reusing the archiva indexer and indexes your local repository. Once archiva allows downloading the lucene index from remote repositories, the netbeans module will incorporate that as well and you will know about all versions out there.
