Is this a plug-in for Tomcat that needs to be downloaded and installed separately?
No plugin is required for Tomcat. The extension/plugin needs to be placed in your Maven pom as per the instructions here: http://docs.codehaus.org/display/MAVENUSER/Upload+artifacts
Do you run Archiva with just command line with Jetty? > What are your experiences of running inside Tomcat, if you have tried > that? I run Archiva in Tomcat. Setup was straightforward using the instructions in the getting started guide.
Ditto I got Archiva with Tomcat to work on a Unix box here, however the application I think was challenged by the corporate firewall policy here. Should not be too much of a problem as long as in your settings.xml you remember to include the archiva server as one of the nonProxyHosts (assuming, of course, that you have a proxy configured in your settings.xml ).
