Thinking about it a bit more, I think I must be at least a little wrong as I have seen <version>2.0-alpha-1</version> and <version>1.0.0-alpha-2-SNAPSHOT</version> and stuff.
I guess the best option is to go dig in the source. Tell us what you find. Sorry, it seems versions are a little confusing to me as well today...
