What does Configuration Tag in CI Management ?

while reading about some questions there on the mailing list i stumbeld 
about

<ciManagement>
<system>continuum</system>
   <notifiers>
       <notifier>
       <type>mail</type>
       <sendOnError>true</sendOnError>
       <sendOnFailure>true</sendOnFailure>
       <sendOnSuccess>false</sendOnSuccess>
       <sendOnWarning>false</sendOnWarning>

   <configuration>
       <address>[EMAIL PROTECTED]</address>
   </configuration>
   </notifier>
</notifiers>
</ciManagement>

For what exacly is that configuration with EMail Tag ?
Looking at the XSD for the pom i found this :

<xs:documentation source="description">Extended configuration specific to this 
notifier goes here.</xs:documentation>
