It seems one also needs to add the <earSourceDirectory>
After trying that , the following eventually gave the desired result.
<earSourceDirectory>${basedir}</earSourceDirectory>
<earSourceIncludes>META-INF/*</earSourceIncludes>
"Don't take the name of root in vain."
