I think the problem is actually on the interpretation of the 1st point. The instruction assume you will install maven in /usr/local/apache-maven-2.0.8 when you installed it in /usr/local/apache-maven-2.0.8/apache-maven-2.0.8. There is a natural confusion : is the name of the archive the final directory or not ?
