I've started using and reading docs on Maven. While using and also while
referring docs, realized that, when maven is being used for the first time,
it downloads a lot of artifacts (jars, poms, etc).

I wanted to find out whether it is a must to have internet connection while
using maven?

For example, how will you suggest to use maven for the first time on a
production environment, where for sure there'll not be an internet
connection or a proxy available to download something from the net across
the firewall. How do you suggest to handle such a scenario?

Thanks!
