James, I'd recommend you create or edit an existing JIRA with more of the details of the idea and how it would work. Use that to gauge whether there is enough interest perhaps before you go through the organization work of getting it released.
It not leveraging the record reader/writer approach probably would impact the excitement level but that could just be me assuming what it does and the use cases it would be for.
