I agree, and I believe this is a major deficiency in the JPA
specification, and it's been raised numerous times.
The JPA spec does not provide for extension points, neither in
annotations nor in xml. And the fact that all JCP specifications
require that vendors must not extend the specified xml means that
vendors must have their own separate annotations in their own name
spaces, and they must have a completely different "orm.xml" in their
own name spaces in order to complement (not extend) the orm.
