In Linux, with gnome-screenshot, you can:

   - take a snapshot of the entire screen, a window, or any piece of the
   screen that you choose
   - save it directly to a file.  No need to paste it into another program
   like gimp.

There is a similar free program for Windows called something like "snip
tool".
