I have exactly the same problem and will now also go back to version 3+ if I
can find out how to do that - I am technically illiterate!

I have loaded the latest Open Office and more than once but unlike my
earlier version I am unable to get the spellchecker to work.
I have tried the forums you recommend with no luck as there is no
comprehensive answer to this problem. I have resorted to going back to ver
3+ and the checker works with that.
I have been told there is a problem with Open Office and Windows 8.1.1 64
bit. I understand the problem is not unsurmountable but the forum doesn’t
make sense.
I hope you can send a comprehensive fix. I shall make a hard copy if the fix
works
