This was an exceptionally bad e-mail from Dennis, that was interpreted in an exceptionally misleading way by people who for some reason would profit from a wrong interpretation. I see it as a "what if" game, but a very bad one.

You can follow the discussion on the dev list and you will see that active developers are feeling disappointed by the message but are still thinking that the best solution is just to continue working on the next release as usual. This, of course, won't make news.

In addition, every hardcore developer knows that windows, *nix'es and *nux'es are full of backdoors to begin with - not only in the kernel, but in many other apps and libraries.

But hey ... it's the nature of the age we are living in.
