Read-only mode is enabled when auxiliary files with the *.~lock* extension are active. Find them in the search bar by typing *.~lock* and deleting all of them. This will unlock the original files in edit mode. Regarding your question, your old files won't disappear after updating OpenOffice as long as they're in the document folders. You can still back them up to a flash drive.

After excursions through some of that, I was rewarded with a headache and alot of confusion. QUESTION: If I give up and download a new version will my old files disappear?
