Read-only mode is enabled when auxiliary files with the *.~lock* extension
are active.
Find them in the search bar by typing *.~lock* and deleting all of them.
This will unlock the original files in edit mode.
Regarding your question, your old files won't disappear after updating
OpenOffice as long as they're in the document folders. You can still back
them up to a flash drive.

I have had O.O. for over 10 years. For about a month I haven't
been able to use it the way I did.that was 2nd nature - easy - 😁
but no matter what, I could not turn off the read only. 😓😓

I asked for and was shown a screen with a 2-stroke "fix" but that did not
work. It also took me to dozens of screens that were foreign to me. Such as
were many paragraphs re:"winding down." After excursions through some of
that, I was rewarded with a headache and alot of confusion.

QUESTION: If I give up and download a new version will my old files
disappear?

All the best,
Jan Nye
