Not too sure if anyone answered... my only thought (and I'm unsure whether this would solve the issue or not) would be to check the amount of memory assigned to OOo graphics. Have a look under the OpenOffice.org/memory screen after selecting tools>options ... I think the default "use for openoffice.org" = 9mb.
Try increasing and see what happens. What sort of documents are open when you have this issue?
