One of my favourite features in OOo (which MSO does not have) is "default". Whenever I copy info from the web, it is all wonky formatting. In MSO this is a HUGE pita to fix/get to not jump all over the place. In OOo, I select all, right click and hit "default" (top option in the context menu). That gets rid of all formatting (including URLs). Then I can apply styles at will and I'm happy-happy. Try this and see if it does what you want. I know it works well in Writer, but imagine it will also work fine in Calc.
