Thank you for any clarification on this glitch in my document opening.
What's most likely happening is that the specific files which cause problems make use of a Word feature or have a layout which triggers a bug in OpenOffice.org. This bug makes the program crash, and you end up with the crash reporter window which sends to Sun a report with the details of the crash so that developers can have a look at them and hopefully find the cause of the problem. It can take some time for reports to be investigated as there are a number of them and they must be analysed.
Since you've already sent the report and it's likely that all occurrences of the problem are similar, I don't think there's much need for you to keep sending the reports (for that specific file opening issue, if you encounter other problems within OOo please do keep to submit reports). What would be of help, if the files you're having problems with do not contain any confidential information, would be to file an issue in IssueZilla with the problem files as an attachment. This way, the problem can hopefully be easily reproduced.
