First, even if the document is copyrighted, if this is an unusual problem, you can provide the document directly to Sun to inspect.

This keeps it off the public board. That said, how about a quick sanity check... I assume that Edit | Changes | Record is NOT set. If it is, can you use Edit | Changes | Accept or Reject to see if any changes were recorded. Just a guess.
When I do so the corresponding part isn't removed but just marked for being removed. That in fact doesn't make the filesize smaller, but it looks like the images weren't marked for being deleted, even though I think they should be.

This leads me to believe that you are recording changes. If you are recording changes, then nothing will be removed! If you turn off "record changes", and then delete the images, they should be gone and the file should be smaller.
