I have submitted it issue
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=42009 but it was closed as WORKSFORME at the same time the qa person asked for
more information. So I am would like to ask the users if they have seen this release of OOo crash when activating java from Tools > Options.

Just one correction: I didn't close the issue as WORKSFORME, I've just changed the resolution and and added the keyword 'needmoreinfo'. By now this issue is really closed. It's duplicate to 41437.

As far as I am concerned changing the resolution of any issue without
investigation is closing/dismissing the issue. This kind of action is
too often done especially when the error report is included in the
issue. That I missed finding the earlier issue is more a fault of Issue
Tracker which we all know is iffy at best.
- there has been no error report when I set it to worksforme. The error report has been attached later.

Since you resolved the issue as worksforme I can only gather that you either do not use Gnome or that you had previously applied the workaround from 41437.
- I have tried to activate java. What I have done I've written in issue 42009

I suggest that when you do not understand what is in an issue you only
change the resolution to started and ask for more information. I
understand the key words and look for them but others may not.
- I've changed the the resolution to a state the is valid for me.

I would also recommend that you actually test using the same platform. Workforme on a windows box such as yours is very likely different that Solaris or Linux seeing as these are the OSes that use Gnome.
- in you first description there is nothing about gnome. BTW I've been using gnome, not windows.

You might also see about fixing which headers you employ. Post To is not one that is normally available and it inserts garbage typical of a windows box.
