Please Help! I had PC trouble, my motherboard needed replaced. My friend put
a new motherboard and processor in for me. I told him I wanted everything
saved, especially the emails that I had saved, as well as bookmarked sites.
He told me that my Outlook Express items were saved in "My Documents"
folder. When I tried to open these items with Open Office, the material is
unreadable. It looks like hieroglyphics or whatever. Either I did something
wrong, he saved this stuff wrong, or I need to set Open Office up to make
this readable. CAn you help me get this fixed?
Thanks very much for any response!
Sincerely,
JQuick

Jeff,
Are your mail files .eml or .dbx? Files with extension
.eml are just text files, but the .dbx files are propriatary
Microsoft database files for Outlook Express (and
perhaps Outlook too, I don't know.)
I have never found how to reattach .dbx files to
Outlook Express.
You have to have other software to access the messages
in .dbx files. There is a program that will extract .eml
files from .dbx archives. I did a Google search for
DBXtract. The version I use was free when I
downloaded it a couple of years ago, but the current
version is $5. You pay first, and I tell you that if you have
email that is important this is cheap.
Here is the URL I just found:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
The free version was a bit annoying to use because
it extracted individual messages and you had to be
darned careful about the "extract to" path. However,
with care I was able to access all my OEx messages.
Lots of luck
