Barbara:

This may be hard to figure out, but to have a file open in MSO products,
you would have to ask their creator: Microsoft. It would be easy for
them to do this since the specifications for the format are available
for all the read.

You have two other options:
1. Download and install OpenOffice.org yourself (it's free, and if you
have broadband, not a problem for the large download)
2. Ask the person to save the file in a format your program can open. It
sounds like you have MSO. They can save in .doc or .rtf.
